It has to work this time. Lord, please, I don’t think we can do this again. Thoughts raced through Janelle’s mind. Staring out through the clinic window, she watched the snow coming down. It captivated her and held her entranced. If it’s snowing like this, if He can make something so beautiful…

“Mrs. Trent?”

Turning to the voice, Janelle saw a nurse standing in the doorway. “Yes.” Janelle’s words came out in a bare whisper, she was so afraid.

“The doctor will see you now. Please follow me.” The nurse, who Janelle didn’t recognize, started down the hallway.

Janelle followed behind slowly, delaying the inevitable. Watching the nurse walk briskly in front of her, she was only aware of the quiet rubbery sound of the nurse’s shoes as they hit each step. It became very rhythmic and seemed to make the trip down the hall last forever. Or maybe she was just hoping it would.

There was a time when she literally ran down this hallway to hear the news that today she was afraid to hear. Every time, a little more hope faded from her heart. Now, even though she knew it was wrong, a part of her would think negatively, just so the results wouldn’t seem to hurt as much.

The nurse tapped lightly on the doctor’s door and then opened it, ushering Janelle in. The nurse then went through the office, opened an inner door, said something in a low voice and then disappeared. Janelle watched as the doctor walked through the same door.
“Dr. Igras,” was all Janelle could say.

“Janelle, how are you?” Dr. Igras didn’t expect an answer because she already knew. “Are we waiting on Kevin?”

Janelle shook her head. “No. He… He… He just can’t anymore.”
